A Lagos based Non-Governmental Organization Zarephath Aid on Thursday 7th May 2026 secured the release of an inmate of Maximum correctional centre Kirikiri Lagos. The inmate, Akponinibofa Balance Practice was awaiting trial for the offence of conspiracy to kidnap and had been in custody since 2024. Delivering a ruling on an application by Mr Ben Abraham for the NGO, the presiding Judge Hon Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos High Court Ikeja held that the prosecution had failed to show diligence in prosecuting the matter since the arraignment of the defendant. The court added that the inability of the prosecution to assemble its witnesses despite several adjournments had left it with no choice than to strike out the charge and order the release of the defendant. It further stated that the constitutional safeguards provided in such circumstances would avail the defendant. The Court consequently ordered the immediate release of the defendant. Speaking to Zarephath Aid, the released inmate who benefitted from the pro bono service of the Organization lamented the condition of the custodial centre among others. WATCH HERE
