Lagos to Launch State Driver’s License, Green Line Rail Gets FG Funding
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-owned driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety and order in the state.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 ministerial briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the second-term anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He said the new licence would be launched within a few weeks and motorists would have the option of choosing either the federal driver’s licence or the Lagos State version.
According to him, the new system is expected to speed up the process of issuing licences and reduce the delays currently experienced by applicants. He added that the initiative would also help improve safety and proper conduct on Lagos roads.
Osiyemi also announced that the Federal Executive Council has approved funding for the first phase of the Lagos Green Line rail project, which is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026. The 68-kilometre rail line will run from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, passing through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Sangotedo, with about 17 stations.
He said the state government has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China Harbour Engineering Company for the execution of the project. The Green Line is expected to transport about 35,000 passengers every hour as part of efforts to improve transportation across Lagos.
The commissioner further stated that the Lagos Red Line rail project has been expanded with the purchase of 24 new coaches. He added that studies are ongoing for the second phase of the project, which will connect Oyingbo to the National Theatre and link the Red Line to the Blue Line.
